MGS-Terminal LLC ZhB-1, ZhB-2, ZhB-3 berths are located in the Bolshoi Turukhtan Harbour at St Petersburg sea-port.

The berths are designed for transshipment of containers and general cargo.

Project brief: to enable the berth to accommodate increased operational load taking into account the shift of the design seabed level alongside the berth to -9.0m BES from the current -7.8m BES.

An integrated programme of scientific research and feasibility studies was implemented to achieve this target, with the final decision to effect repairs using soil-cement piles to reinforce the berth filling.

The role of Morstroytechnology in this project was not only that of designer, but also general contractor. The repair work was undertaken by MOL-MORSTROY CJSC, with scientific and technical support provided by Morstroytechnology.

In the course of the repairs, the berths were pre-loaded, the strain-stress distribution of the structure was monitored, and the durability and shape of the soil-cement piles inspected.

Analysis of the results of the whole process provided compelling evidence of the efficiency of taking such a scientific approach to design and construction. For instance, overall construction cost was reduced by 2.5–3 times against conventional solutions (sheet pile wall, pipe fence screening, ground anchorage).
